Our Background & Legacy
A Rich History: The British Era & Porto Grande
The origins of Agência Nacional de Viagens (ANV) date back to the 19th century, deeply rooted in
Mindelo's strategic role during the Atlantic steamship era. Around 1838–1839, British firms established
coal bunkering stations in São Vicente, transforming Porto Grande into a world-class maritime hub
connecting Europe, Africa, and the Americas.
Among these pioneers was Millers & Cory (later Cory Brothers), which established operations in Porto
Grande in 1875 under the local direction of Mr. Zangury. Operating from the iconic building overlooking
the bay, the firm provided coal, ship chandlery, watering, crew support, and maritime agency services,
laying the foundation for Mindelo’s commercial growth and cosmopolitan identity.
Who We Are: Independence & Evolution
Following Cabo Verde's independence in 1975, the foreign-operated assets were nationalized by late 1978.
On July 12, 1980, the Agência Nacional de Viagens (ANV) was officially established as a state-owned
enterprise, making it the oldest travel and shipping agency in the nation.
For decades, ANV played a pivotal role in the maritime national transport and tourism, acting as the
primary ticketing and sales agent for TACV (Cabo Verde Airlines) and integrating into the global IATA
system. Following economic restructuring under Decree-Law no 29/97 of May 20, 1997, the company was
privatized, consolidating in 1998 into the present Limited Company (ANV S.A.) while preserving its
iconic head office in Mindelo.
